About Us

Founded in late 2007, the NUS ACM is a Student Chapter of the Association of Computing Machinery.

As a interest group in NUS, I guess we are less burdened by the pressures of organizing events repeatedly year after year, constant comparisons to the previous exco’s performance and the like. This lack of mundanity is exactly what makes us unique.

A young, dynamic club, we are essentially a group of computer-loving people here to show you how cool computing can get.

We hope, primarily, to break that aura and the mystique that surround stuff that has anything to do with computers or the web through these workshops held periodically through the year on various professional software tools, evolving web technologies and more, thereby empowering you with the skills to make you efficient in what you do best, or aspire to, at least and at the same time making you that tech-savvy person that you always wanted to be.

Last year, we conducted workshops on Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Flash, Effective use of Free Web Tools and Adobe Premiere. This year, we started off with a workshop on Microsoft Silverlight in April.

Our seminars are targeted at those students who are excited about furthering their interest in specific areas of Computing. Last year, we brought the Computational Thinking Seminars, a two MC course, conducted with the support of the School of Computing. This year, we will be having our Academic Speaker Series soon.

Basically, our seminars are short, informative sessions by which you can get to know the professors much better as the talks are generally on their areas of research and passion.

The Bytes is our bi-monthly online newsletter for members which was relaunched in February 2010 in a new avatar as a micro-newsletter (printed and online). The Bytes will soon will be available as a Google Chrome Extension for students to receive real-time updates from the on Computing and Technology from NUS and around the world, right from their browser.

Earlier, the online newsletter covered a wide range of topics from Cloud Computing and interviews with professors to in-depth analysis of the visual effects employed in the latest flicks and tidbits from a hacker’s diary. Variety, anyone?

With the help of the RealAcad, we were able to conduct a string of workshops and seminars on Interview skills and Resume Review last year. The small classes and the practical approach taken by the trainers generated positive feedback for these workshops and we are working real hard to have them again this year.

From the response to our web development workshops last year, we gauged that a lot of students find the web just as fascinating as we do. So, we thought, this year, we would expand the concept of a workshop even further by allowing students to actually test out what they learnt and host their applications on our site.

Just learnt how to write a matric number validator or created your own Flash Slideshow? Of course, you’ve got it show it your friends! Upload on the Apps site. Maybe you can even link it in your resume. Dont worry, we have the space to host it all.

You will have to wait a bit for this. We are working on the backend for now. But do let us know as to what you would like to see at innovate@nusacm.org
